What is complementary medicine?

A

Involves any medical system based on a theory of disease or method of treatment other than the orthodox science of medicine as taught in medical schools

Why do people access complementary medicines?

A
  • Persistent symptoms
  • Real or perceived adverse effects of conventional treatments
  • Preference for ‘holistic’ approach to their problem
  • May feel they receive more time and attention
  • High level of satisfaction reported (probably getting conned tbh)

What are some of the main concerns a doctor may have about patients using complementary therapies?

  • Patients may see unqualified practitioners
  • May risk missed or delayed diagnosis
  • May refuse conventional treatment
  • May waste money on ineffective treatments
  • The mechanisms of some complementary treatments is so implausible it cannot work, e.g. homeopathy

What are some of the issues with the evidence base for complementary medicines?

  • Hard to generate funding
  • Trial of single intervention may not reflect reality
  • Difficult to make double-blind

  • High public interest
  • Half GPs provide access
  • Could address inequalities in access/opportunity
  • Should apply same standards
  • NICE could stimulate more/higher quality research

  • Money in NHS limited
  • NICE has higher priorities
  • Poor quality evidence

Describe the process of aromatherapy.

A

The controlled use of essential oils, which have therapeutic properties such as relieving stress, easing tension, improving health and promoting a sense of wellbeing.

A

Stimulating the limbic system of the midbrain, which releases hormones that influence mood.

Describe some proposed benefits for clove oil, yarrow oil and basil.

A
  • Basil – sharpening concentration, uplifting effect on depression, relieve headaches and migranes
  • Clove oil - topical analgesic, especially useful in dentistry
  • Yarrow oil - reduce joint inflammation and relieve cold and influenza symptoms
