1
Q

What is the process called that is the synthesis of ATP that’s produced from respiration and photosynthesis

A

Chemiosmosis

2
Q

What does chemiosmosis involve

A

The diffusion of protons through a partially permeable membrane
The protons move down a concentration gradient and releases energy that is then used in the attachement of phosphate to ADP to form atp

3
Q

Where does the energy come from that creates the proton gradient needed for chemiosmosis

A

Excited electrons

T

4
Q

What for electrons become excited by

A

Electrons in chlorophyll are excited by absorbing light from sun
High energy electrons are released when chemical bonds are broken in respiratory substrate molecules

5
Q

What for excited electrons create that then creates a proton concentration gradient

A

Electron transport chain
This is made up of electron carriers each with lower energy bonds from the one before
Excited electrons move from 1 to the other while releasing energy
This energy is then used to pump protons across the membrane

6
Q

How do protons travel back through the membranes down there concentration gradient

A

Travel through a hydrophilic membrane channel linked to the enzyme ATP synthase
The flow of protons through this channel provides energy used to synthesise ATP
ADP + Pi
