Flashcards in 3. Critique of the Medical Model Deck (1):
What does Szasz say about mental illness? What's the citation for this?
Mental Illness is a socially created construct by higher members of society.
Term “mental illness” can only be used metaphorically, given that an illness must be objectively demonstrable biological pathology, something Szasz claimed was not characteristic of psychological disorders.
What a psychiatrist calls pathology is nothing more than a deviation from the consensus reality, or common morality.
