What is female circumcision?

A

to the manipulation or removal of external genital organs in girls and women

What happens in a Type I female circumcision?

A

excision of the prepuce, with or without excision of part or all of the clitoris

A

clitoridectomy and partial or total excision of the labia minora

A

removing part or all of the external genitalia and reapproximation of the remnant labia majora, leaving a small neointoitus

What happens in a Type IV female circumcision?

A

other forms of injuries to the genital region including pricking, piercing, stretching, burning, scraping or any other manipulation of external genitalia

What are some Periprocedural Complications with female circumcision?

A

– surgical precision can be compromised by lack of anesthesia, the struggles of the child held forcibly in the lithotomy position, and the experience of the operator. Complications include hemorrhage, infection, oliguria and sepsis.

What are some long term gynecological complications with female circumcision?

A

dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and chronic vaginal infections

What is a defibulation?

A

a surgical technique to reverse the closure of the vaginal opening after a type III infibulation

Why might some women want a defibulation?

A

because they are pregnant or planning pregnancy, or because of dyspareunia, dysmenorrhea or difficulty urinating

What is refibulation?

A

After giving birth, some women might want the restoration of the infibulation. The woman may only feel comfortable being infibulated (don’t google image search this word lol)
