What is thrombosis?

A

Formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system.

What does thrombosis start with?

A

Atheromas.

What can the atheroma do to the artery?

A

Rupture the endothelium of an artery - damaging it and leaving a rough surface.

What happens at the damages site?

A

Platelets and fibrin (protein) accumulate at the site of damage and form a blood clot (thrombus).

How is the blood clot dangerous?

A

It can cause blockage of artery or can become dislodged and block a blood vessel elsewhere in the body.

What can also cause another blood clot?

A

Debris from the rupture further down the artery.
