Teen Sexuality ACOG Recommendations

A
  • ACOG recommends annual screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea in all sexually active adolescents
  • No symptoms, which is why screening is done
  • Can lead to scarring of the fallopian tubes and infertility
  • Reported to the state
  • Easily and effectively treated w/ antibiotics
  • Can be easily screened for w/ a urine sample or vaginal swab w/ out speculum
  • Test of cure for Chlamydia should be done in 3-4 months, as reinfection is common

Contraceptive options

A
  • LARC; long acting reversible contraception
  • Implant
    • prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation and thicken cervical mucous and may alter the uterine lining (progesterone only)
  • IUD
    • 2 types: hormonal w/ levonorgestrel (Mirena) and non-hormonal/ copper (ParaGard)

Gardasil 9

  • Contains 9 diff. HPV types, not life virus, proteins of HPV
  • Protects against cervical cancer, vulvar and vaginal cancer, anal cancer, precancerous lesions, genital warts
  • Now indicated women 9-26, series of 3 shots
