1
Q

What are antibiotics?

A

A naturally produced agent acting against bacteria

2
Q

What is the difference between antibiotic resistance and cinical antibiotic resistance?

A

In clinical antibiotic resistance, strains of bacteria immune to antibiotics are found within a population

3
Q

What is MDR resistance?

A

Multi-drug resistance

Resistance to at least one agent in 3 or more antimicrobial categories

4
Q

What is XDR resistance?

A

Extensively drug resistant

Resistant to at least one agent in all but 2 or fewer antimicrobial categories

(there are only 1-2 treatment options left)

5
Q

What is PDR resistance?

A

Pan-drug resistant bacteria

There are no agents suitbale to treat the organism

6
Q

What is transformation as a method of obtaining resistance?

A

Bacteria can scavenge resistant genes from dead bacteria

7
Q

What is transduction as a method of obtaining resistance?

A

Viruses can pick up resistant genes and transfer them from one form to another

8
Q

What is conjugation as a method of obtaining resistance?

A

Genes are transferred between bacterial cells through tubes called pili (bacterial sex)

9
Q

What is antimicrobial stewardship?

A

The organisational, or healthcare system wide approach to promoting and monitoring use of antimicrobials to preserve their effectiveness

10
Q

Which factors contribute to resistance?

A

Type of antibiotics (4Cs) and broad spectrum

Too long duration

Too many antibiotics

Previosu and repeated courses
