1
Q

What is special about the 2 strands of the DNA molecule?

A

They are complimentary (fit together)

2
Q

Where would you get DNA for testing? Which cells?

A

Blood test, only the white blood cells have DNA.

3
Q

What happens to the DNA when doing DNA testing?

A
  • Isolate DNA from cells
  • Cut DNA up using enzymes.
4
Q

How are the two strands of DNA separated?

A

THe DNA is heated, the protein is denatured, so the strands stay apart.

5
Q

What is a gene probe?

A

A piece of DNA that “fits” onto the DNA that is being tested for.

6
Q

What does the gene probe do?

A

Attaches to the base sequence that is being looked for.

7
Q

How are the DNA fragments separated out?

A

Gel Electrophoresis - a bit like chromatography,

8
Q

How is the result of the DNA test read?

A

UV light reacts with the gene probe
