Where are baker’s cysts found?

A

Present as swelling in the popliteal fossa (inferior and medial)

MOI for a baker’s cyst

A

Herniation of synovial membrane through joint capsule

Egress of fluid flow through a normal communication to gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa

Baker’s cysts in children

A

Common, M>F, medial > lateral

Surgery is rarely indicated as most will resolve in 10-20 months

Baker’s cysts in adults

A

frequently associated with meniscal tears and chondral injury
Can mimic a DVT when enlarged or when it ruptures can mimic thrombophlebitis

Common s/s of baker’s cyst

A

post. knee pain, knee stiffness, swelling or mass behind the knee

Tx of baker’s cyst

A

tx underlying pathology
knee joint steroid injections
PT for compression
Surgery: high incidence of recurrence

What is Foucher’s sign?

A

Indicates a baker’s cyst because the mass disappears once you bend the knee
