A

It may later become infected

How is biliary colic treated?

A
  1. Low fat diet and weight loss
  2. Cholecystectomy
  3. Ursodeoxycholic acid (if surgery is not an option)

A
  1. IV antibiotics and fluids
  2. Urgent surgery

Why are gallstones sometimes associated with jaundice?

A

Stones can migrate into the common bile duct blocking it

(post hepatic jaundice)

A

It can block the sphincter of Oddi and backpressure of pancreatic enzymes occurs in the pancreas

These enzymes prematurely activate and can digest pancreatic tissue causing inflammation

This is when a gallstone causes obstruction in the bowel
