Biology Test C Flashcards

1
Q

In the kidney what is the function of ADH

A

ADH causes the reabsorption of water from the collecting tubule. it is released by the posterior pituitary gland and causes the collecting tubule to be more permeable to water.

Q

Which of the following is not a lipid derivative?

Waxes, Steroids, Carotenoids, Albumins, Lecithin

A

Q

what happens in the lambda phage when a virus that infects bacteria

A

Lambda phage has two methods of reproduction, the lytic cycle and the lysogenic cycle.
In the lytic cycle, the phage attaches to a host bacterial cell and insects it’s DNA into the bacterium. The virus uses the nucleotides, enzymes, and ribosomes of the host bacterium to replicate and organizes the DNA and coat proteins into new phages. The host cell bursts, releasing the phages. In the Lysogenic cycle, the phase attaches to a host bacterial cell and injects its DNA into the bacterium. The phage DNA is integrated into the genome of the bacterial host, and when the bacterium divides by binary fission, the viral DNA is passed on to daughter cells.

Q

What is the phylum Echinodermata?

A

Echinoderms are the invertebrate predecessors of the chordates. They include the starfish, the sea urchin, and the sea cucumber and are characterized by having a primitive vascular system known as the water vascular system. Also, the adults are radially symmetrical while the larvae are bilaterally symmetrical. They move with structures known as tube feet, have no backbone and do not make their own food and are therefore heterotrophic.

Q

What are homologous structures?

A

morphologically similar structures with a common evolutionary origin that perform different functions. Ex: The wing of a bat and the foreleg of an alligator.

Q

What are analogous structures?

A

body parts that resemble one another in different species because they have evolved independently as adaptations to similar environmental pressures, not because they have evolved from a common ancestor.
