1
Q

What does the Golgi stain allow yo to visualise?

A

Individual nerve cells, unique property of completely staining a few cells in the specimen
E.g. pyramindal neurone- cell body and dendritic processes

2
Q

Which of the illustrated methods can be used to map specific pathways of axons?

A

Tract tracing

3
Q

What is tract tracing?

A

When horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injected into thalamus where tips of axons in that region picket it up

4
Q

What is retrograde transport?

A

From the axon to the cell body

5
Q

What is anterograde transport?

A

From the cell body to the synapse

6
Q

What technique would you use to identify specific cell types and/or components of cells?

A

Immunocytochemistry

7
Q

What does immunocyctochemistry virus utilise?

A

The precise antigen specificity of antibodies

8
Q

What are the steps of immunocytochemistry?

A

Antibody is conjugated with a dye, or enzyme and then applied to the tissue being studied
Antibodies bind to the antigen thus localising the dye or attached enzyme at the site of the target molecule
Enhanced by using a signal amplification method

9
Q

What are the two cytoskeletal components which can be used to identify neurons?

A

Microtubules

Neurofilaments

10
Q

What do microtubules do in the cytoskeletal components?

A

Form axonal part of cytoskeleton

11
Q

What do neurofilaments do in cytoskeletal components?

A

Intermediate filaments specific to the neuron

12
Q

What method should be used to detect cytoskeletal components?

A

Immunolabelled neurones- antibodies raised against molecules associated with neuronal cytoskeleton

13
Q

What are pyramidal neurons?

A

Output neurons, sending their axons to other regons of the cortex and to deeper structures of the brain
