Esophageal cancer originates from two types of cells?
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus (AE)
Squamous cell carcinoma is found in which part of the esophagus?
The upper third
Adenocarcinoma is found in which part of the esophagus?
The lower third and at the gastro-esphageal junction.
Risk factors for Squamous Cell Carcinoma?
Smoking and Alcohol
Primary risk factor for Adenocarcinoma of the Esophagus?
GERD
What is Barrett’s Esophagus?
Inflamed tissue in the lower esophagus. GERD also increases risk and is thought to be an intermediate stage between GERD and Adenocarcinoma.
What are symptoms of Esophageal cancer?
Dysphagia, heartburn-like pain, hoarsness, coughing, anorexia and weight loss.
What are treatments for esophageal cancer?
Dialation, chemo, radiation, (combined chemo/ radiation), targeted therapy and surgery
Esophageal cancer patients eligable for surgery generally get one of two surgeries?
Esophagectomy or Esophagogastrectomy
What is an Esophagectomy?
Surgery involving surgical removal of cancerous tissue within the esophagus, nearby lymph nodes and possibly part of the stomach
What is an Esophagogastrectomy?
Surgery involving removal of the cancerous tissue within the esophagus, nearby lymph nodes, and the top portion of the stomach. The remaining stomach is pulled up and connected to the remaining portion of the esoph.
What is dumping syndrome?
Caused when incompletely digested and hyperosmolar chyme enter the mll intestine. Causes bloating, abdominal cramps, nausea, and dumping.
What is the anti-dumping diet?
Limit foods high in concentrated sugar, Higher, low-lactose, low-fat. Drink fluids 30 min before and after a meal. Avoid fluids with meals, 5-6 smaller meals. Chee food well.
What is Ablation?
A procedure intended to shrink the size of the tumor, allowing soft or pureed foods to pass by.
What is a stint insertion?
It is intended to create a bypass through the esophagus. The goal is to releave dysphagia.
