1
Q

Shock

A

Condition produced when the cardiovascular-pulmonay system fails to deliver enough oxygenated blood to body tissues to support the metabolic needs.

2
Q

What are the various forms of shock?

A

Hypovolemic shock
Cardiogenic shock
Distributive shock
Obstructive shock

3
Q

What are the stages that a patient will undergo when suffering from any form of shock?

A

Initial stage
Compensatory stage
Progressive stage
Refractory stage

4
Q

What is the initial stage of shock?

A

Cells are deprived of oxygen, which inhibits their ability to produce energy.

5
Q

What are some of the physiological adaptations in the compensatory stage?

A

Increased respiration rate to increase oxygen content to body cells
Increased blood pressure to compensate for hypotension
Reduced blood supply to the peripheral organs to improve blood supply to the brain

6
Q

What is happening physiologically in the progressive stage?

A

Vital organs are compromised and will not function appropriately
Systolic hypotension

7
Q

What occurs in the three types of distributive shock?

A

Result of vasodilation and abnormal distribution of fluids within the circulatory system.

8
Q

What are the three types of distributive shock?

A

Septic
Anaphylactic
Neurogenic

9
Q

What is another name for distributive shock?

A

Vasogenic shock
