Coastal Zone Flashcards
Constructive Wave
Gently breaking waves, with much stronger swash than backwash
Destructive Waves
Gently breaking waves, with much stronger backwash than swash which causes erosion
Fetch
The distance travelled by wind or waves across open water
Faults
A crack in the surface of a rock
Joints
Small cracks in layers of the Rock created during earth movements
Bedding Plane
Line in rock that separates weak rocks and stronger one
Abrasion
Wearing away of cliffs a result of sediment being flung by breaking waves
Solution
Acids contained in sea water will dissolve rocks such as limestone
Hydraulic Action
When waves smash into the faults and joints it increases the amount of air compressed leading to erosion
Attrition
When rocks and boulders bump into each others and break up into smaller piece
Saltation
Small boulders are bounced along the surface of the sea
