Q

What is the difference between the right subclavian artery & the left subclavian artery?

A

Left subclavian arises from aortic arch

Right subclavian artery arises from the bracheocephalic artery, which arises from the aortic arch

16
Q

What artery arises from the external iliac artery?

A

Common femoral

this splits quickly and is quite short

17
Q

What arteries arise from the common femoral?

A

Deep & superficial femoral

18
Q

The superficial femoral artery eventually becomes the ________

A

Popliteal artery

19
Q

What arteries branch off the popliteal artery?

A

Anterior & posterior tibial

20
Q

What artery gives rise to the Dorsalis pedis artery?

A

Anterior tibial

21
Q

Describe the course of the Superficial femoral artery down the leg

A

Runs down the inner thigh before bending and running to the back of the femur

Once it arrives at the femur, it becomes the popliteal artery

22
Q

What group of arteries split off the popliteal artery in the Popliteal fossa (back of the knee)?

A

Genicular arteries

23
Q

When does the popliteal artery split into the anterior & posterior tibial arteries?

A

Just below the Popliteal fossa (back of knee)

24
Q

Describe the course of the posterior tibial artery

A

Runs posterior to the tibia funnily enough

Continues down and enters the sole of the foot inferior to the medial malleolus (malleolus = bony projection on the side of your ankles)

Ie the left PT aa will enter the sole of the foot inferior to the medial (right) malleolus of the left foot

25
Q

What pulses can be palpated on the lower limbs?

A

Femoral

Popliteal

Posterior tibial

Dorsalis pedis

26
Q

Describe where the femoral pulse is located

A

Inferior to inguinal ligament, half way between the anterior superior iliac spine and the symphysis pubis (mid inguinal point)

27
Q

Describe where the popliteal pulse is located

A

Behind the knee joint (popliteal fossa)

28
Q

Describe where the Posterior tibial pulse is located

A

Behind and about 2cm below the medial malleolus

29
Q

Describe where the dorsalis pedis pulse is located

A

On the dorsum of the foot, lateral to tendon of the extensor hallucis longus (the tendon to the big toe)

In groove between 1st and 2nd metatarsals
