1
Q

How do you respond to all lights at an intersection flashing red with other vehicles coming from all directions?

A

The flashing red lights act as a four way stop sign, so each vehicle should stop at the light, with the first person to stop proceeding first.

2
Q

When two cars are approaching each other on a hill, who has to move out of the way to let the other pass?

A

Where neither can pass, the vehicle facing downhill must yield the right-of-way by backing up until the vehicle going uphill can pass. The vehicle facing downhill has the greater amount of control when backing.

3
Q

On which side should you pass trucks?

A

It is always best to pass semi-trucks, as well as other moving vehicles, on the left side whenever possible. Semi-trucks have a very limited view through side view mirrors because of their large size, and their largest blindspot is located on the right side.

4
Q

If you become tired while driving, what should you do?

A

You should either let any passengers with a driver’s license drive the car, if they’re capable, or if you are alone, you should immediately pull over at a designated well lit rest area to get some sleep.

Falling asleep on the road is one of the most dangerous things that can happen and can lead to serious traffic collisions.

5
Q

You can drive off the road to pass another vehicle under what circumstances?

A

You may not drive off the road to pass another vehicle under any circumstances.

6
Q

What is the proper speed that you should approach a railroad crossing you cannot see 100 feet down so that a train doesn’t hit you?

A

You should approach at 15 mph so that you can slowly cross the tracks and make sure that any oncoming trains can see you and be able to stop.

7
Q

What speed should you be traveling to merge onto a highway?

A

You should be driving at or near the same speed as the traffic on the highway when merging.

8
Q

Which lights should you use in fog so you can see the best?

A

Normal headlights. They have the greatest range of visibility in all types of weather. High beams reflect more light through the fog, making it much harder to see than with low beams.

9
Q

What does a white painted curb indicate?

A

A white painted curb indicates a loading zone for passengers or mail only.

10
Q

What should you do when you come to a school bus stopped in front of you with flashing red lights?

A

You should stop where you are on the road, and wait for the flashing red lights and stop sign to go away before proceeding ahead.

11
Q

The “basic speed law” in the United States is that of what?

A

You should never drive faster than is safe for current conditions.

12
Q

About to make a left turn, you must signal continuously during the last how many feet before the turn?

A

Your signal must be on during the last 100 feet before the turn.

13
Q

Which of the following statements about blind spots is true?

  • They are eliminated if you have one outside mirror on each side of the vehicle
  • Large trucks have bigger blind spots than most passenger vehicles
  • Blind spots can be checked by looking in your rear view mirror
A

Large trucks have bigger blind spots than most passenger vehicles

14
Q

As a driver over the age of 21, what is the legal level of BAC (blood alcohol content) that you can have in your system?

A

The legal limit is .08%. Anything over is considered driving under the influence, and will result in getting charged with DUI (driving under the influence).

15
Q

What is the speed limit on a residential street without a speed posted?

A

The speed limit in a residential neighborhood is normally 25 miles per hour, though this can vary by city/state.

16
Q

Under what circumstances may you legally block an intersection?

A

You may block an intersection under no circumstances.

17
Q

Which way should you turn your wheels when parking uphill on a two-way street with no curb?

A

You should turn your wheels away from the street.

18
Q

When does rain make roadways the most slippery?

A

Roadways are most slippery the first rain after a dry spell, and especially for the first 30-60 minutes of that rain.

19
Q

To turn left from a multilane one-way street, which lane should you start your turn from ?

A

You should start your turn from the lane closest to the left curb.

20
Q

When must you obey instructions from school crossing guards?

A

You must obey them at all times.

21
Q

Two sets of solid, double yellow lines that are two or more feet apart mean what?

Can you make a U-turn over them?

A

The lines may not be crossed for any reason. They serve as a solid barrier between both sides of the road. You may never make a U-turn over them.

22
Q

Where can you never park?

A

You may not park close enough to an intersection to be blocking an unmarked crosswalk.

23
Q

Which of these vehicles must always stop before crossing railroad tracks?

  • Tank trucks marked with hazardous materials placards
  • Motor homes or pickup trucks towing a boat trailer
  • Any vehicle with 3 or more axles or weighing more than 4,000 pounds
A

Tank trucks marked with hazardous materials placards must always stop before crossing railroad tracks.

24
Q

You are driving on a one-way street. You may turn left onto another one-way street only if:

  • A sign permits the turn
  • Traffic on the street moves to the right
  • Traffic on the street moves to the left
A

You may turn left onto another one-way street only if traffic on the street moves to the left.

25
Q

How does a truck have to go about turning right onto a street with two lanes in each direction?

A

The truck may have to swing wide to complete the right turn, so give it enough room to do so.

26
Q

You may cross a double, yellow line to pass another vehicle if the yellow line next to your side of the road is what?

A

The yellow line on your side of the road must be a broken line in order for you to pass.

27
Q

When a pedestrian with a guide dog is stepping out into the street, not heeding a green-arrow light given to traffic, what should you do?

A

Although the pedestrian is not obeying traffic laws, he or she must be given the right-of-way for safety reasons. You should slow down and wait for the pedestrian to safely cross. Pedestrians on the road are at a much greater risk of being harmed by the cars around them, and should be given the right-of-way at all times.

28
Q

Is the road meant for only cars, or are bicycles also allowed to use it?

A

Bicyclists actually follow the same rules of the road as automobiles. Although they can get in the way, they have just as much right to use the roadways as cars and trucks.

29
Q

How do you signal that you want to make turns without the use of your blinker?

A

When blinkers don’t work, the use of hand signals is permitted. To make a right turn, you put your left hand out the window pointing up. To turn left, you hold your arm straight out the window.

30
Q

On roads with two or more lanes going in the same direction, what is the general rule of thumb that differentiates faster cars from slower ones?

A

Slower cars most always stay in the right lane, and the faster cars pass slower traffic using the left lane.

31
Q

How do you know when to go if there is no power at a lighted intersection?

A

The intersection acts as a four way stop sign, which means the first person to pull up and stop is the first person to continue through the intersection.

32
Q

How do you handle a blown tire and safely come to a stop?

A

Dealing with a blowout is simple, but it is easy to swerve and cause a traffic accident. In the midst of a blowout, as the driver you should grip the wheel firmly, slow down, and exit the traffic lanes to get to the side of the road and stop.

33
Q

What is the general rule for having your headlights on when you drive?

A

You must turn on your headlights a half hour before sunset and leave them on until a half hour after sunrise.

34
Q

Are you legally allowed to continue down the road if you see a school bus with flashing red lights on the opposite side of a divided roadway?

A

Yes, but you must still be wary of children. You must stop only when the school bus is flashing its lights on a road with no division, or is doing so on your side of the road.

35
Q

If there is a pedestrian crossing the street, but no crosswalk, what should you do?

A

Pedestrians almost always have the right of way. If they are crossing the street, you should stop and let them safely cross.

36
Q

If the speed limit is 50, it’s raining heavily, and you’re going 45 passing people going 30, can you get pulled over?

A

Yes, the conditions are considered unsafe, and you must go with the flow of traffic.

37
Q

Can a 5-year-old who weighs 50 lbs sit in the front seat?

A

No, the law states anyone under 6 years old and less than 60 lbs must be secured in a federally approved child passenger restraint system, and ride in the back seat.

38
Q

Can a passenger in the back seat who doesn’t buckle up get a ticket?

A

No, but you can. You are responsible for the safety of everyone if you are the driver of a vehicle. Certain states will ticket passengers in the backseat if they are 18 or older.

39
Q

Do pedestrians always have the right of way?

A

No, but as a driver you must always yield to a pedestrian if it is safe to do so.

40
Q

Can you pass if the coast is clear on a road with two solid yellow lines?

A

No, you may only pass another vehicle if it is a broken yellow line either for both lanes, or for your lane, and there is no immediate oncoming traffic.

41
Q

Can you make a U-turn at an intersection?

A

You can make a U-turn at any intersection that is not marked “No U-turns” or has a sign designating no U-turns.

42
Q

Can you drive over two sets of double yellow lines to pick up passengers?

A

No, the lines are considered a barrier and you can only make left turns or U turns at designated openings.

43
Q

Which way should you turn the wheels when parking on a hill facing downhill: away from the curb, or towards the curb?

A

Towards the curb, that way if you forget to set your emergency brake, the car won’t swoop down the hill.

44
Q

If it gets really foggy, should you turn your high beams on?

A

No, high beams or “brights” actually reflect off the moisture in the fog cutting down on your visibility; you should drive with your normal headlights in fog.

45
Q

What is the hand-over-hand steering method, and when do you use it?

A

To execute the hand-over-hand steer, the driver reaches across the steering wheel to grab the opposite side and pull their hand over top. This technique should not be used with the advent of Air Bags in the steering column.

46
Q

When driving in a construction zone, what changes as far as receiving a ticket or fine?

A

The cost for making a traffic violation inside a construction zone is doubled, so pay extra attention on the road when in specified construction zones!

47
Q

What is the difference between open (uncontrolled) intersections and controlled intersections?

A

In an open intersection, there are no traffic control signs or signals, so right of way rules decide the flow of traffic. Controlled intersections are governed by traffic lights.

48
Q

What does it mean to “overdrive your headlights”, and why is this something to be avoided?

A

To overdrive your headlights means to not be able to stop inside of the illuminated area ahead of you on the road. Over driving your headlights creates a blind “crash area” in front of your vehicle, and should always be avoided.

49
Q

What is hand-to-hand steering and when should it be used?

A

Hand-to-hand steering is where one hand pushes up on the steering wheel while the other hand slides to the top, pulling the wheel down. This type of steering is used for making very accurate turns, as it has much freedom of movement.
