How do you find fractions of amounts?

A

Divide by the bottom, times by the top

How do you convert from mixed numbers to improper fractions?

A

Multiply the whole number by the bottom of the fraction
Add on the top number - this gives the number of the top of the improper fraction
Keep the bottom the same

How do you convert from improper fractions to mixed numbers?

A

Divide the top number by the bottom
Put the whole number at the front of the mixed number
Put the remainder on the top of fraction
Keep the bottom the same

How do you find % of amounts using a calculator?

A

Turn the % into a decimal then times by the number

45% of 60 = 0.45 x 60 = 27

A

Times the decimal by 100

A

Divide the % by 100

A

Find that fraction of 100%

What do you need to remember when adding/subtracting fractions?

A

You must make bottom number (denominator) must be the same before trying to add or subtract
Convert any mixed numbers into improper fractions before trying to add or subtract

How do you multiply fractions?

A

Multiply the tops (numerators) and multiply the denominators (bottom). You must then simplify!

How do you divide fractions?

A

To divide fractions, flip the dividing (second) fraction then multiply.
KFC - Keep the first, Flip the second, Change the operation

How can I tell if a fraction will be a recurring or terminating decimal?

A

Use the factor tree
If the circled numbers in the factor tree are only 2s and 5s, it’s terminating
If not, it’s recurring

A

Call it x (x = 0.88888….)
Times it be 10 (10x = 8.8888….)
Subtract (9x = 8)
Divide by 9 to give x (x = 8/9)

Times it be 100 (100x = 63.636363....)
Subtract (99x = 63)
