Flashcards in Hydrological Cycle Deck (16):
1

What is precipitation?

Any source of Moisture meeting the ground

2

What is interception?

Water being prevented from reaching f the surface by trees or grass

3

What is surface storage?

Water held on the ground surface e.g. puddles

4

What is infiltration?

Water sinking into soil / rock from the ground

5

What is soil moisture?

Water held in the soil layer

6

What is percolation?

Water seeping report below the surface

7

What is ground water?

Water stored in rock

8

What is transpiration?

Water lost through pores in vegetation

9

What is evaporation?

Water lost from ground / vegetation surface

10

What is surface run off?

Water flowing on top of the ground

11

What is through flow?

Water slowing through the soil layer parallel to the surface

12

What is ground water flow?

Water flowing through the rock layer parallel to the surface

13

What is water table?

The current upper level of saturated rock / soil where no more water can be absorbed

14

What is a permeable surface?

Absorbs water

15

What is an impermeable surface?

Doesn't absorb water

16

Describe the hydrological cycle?

Water from lakes rivers and sees is evaporated and rises
Water from plants is transpired and rises
Water vapour in air condenses
Water falls to the ground as precipitation
Water is moved back to the sea by surface water or ground water flow
