1
Q

What is a chromosome?

A

located in nucleoid, carries essential genes

2
Q

What is a chromid?

A

the intermediate: uses plasmid partitioning system, carries essential genes

3
Q

What is a plasmid?

A

uses plasmid partitioning system, carries nonessential genes

4
Q

What do prokaryotic genomes form?

A

supercoil domains with protein cores

5
Q

Are prokaryote genomes compact?

A

yes: high gene density, little non-coding repetitive sequences, many contain clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)

6
Q

How do different prokaryotic genomes compare?

A

the size and number of genes varies dramatically

7
Q

What do metagenomics study?

A

all genomes in a sample: not all bacteria can be cultured or isolated, DNA can be extracted from a sample & sequenced (environmental: dirt, sea water, car bumper, biological: gut microbiome, skin microbiome)
