शिबिः नृपः आसीत् ।
Śibi was a king.
एकदा कपोतः तम् आगच्छत् ।
One day a pigeon came to him.
हे प्राज्ञ नृप गृध्रः माम् खादिष्यति इति कपोतः अवदत् ।
“O wise king, a vulture will eat me, “ the pigeon said.
शिबिः प्रत्यवदत् अहम् त्वाम् रक्षिष्यामि इति ।
Śibi replied, “I will save you.”
गृध्रः तु नृपस्य वचनम् श्रुत्वा अवदत् हे नृप् यस्मात् त्वम् कपोतम् मह्यम् न ददासि तस्मात् तव मांसम् देहि इति ।
But the vulture, having heard the words of the king, said, “O king, since you will not give me the pigeon then give me your flesh!”
शिबिः स्वदेहात् मांसम् छित्त्वा तत् गृध्राय अददात् ।
Śibi, having cut some flesh from his own body, gave it to that vulture.
गृध्रः तु संतुष्टः न आसीत् ।
But the vulture was not contented.
नृपेण स्वदेहात् मांसम् पुनः छिन्नम् ।
Again, flesh was cut by the king from his own body.
अन्ते गृध्रः संतुष्टः अभवत् ।
In the end the vulture was satisfied.
एवम् कपोतः रक्षितः ।
In this way the pigeon was saved.
गृध्रः अवदत् त्वम् श्रेष्ठः नृपः लोके इति ।
The vulture said, “You are the best king in the world!”
