What is malnutrition?

A

When a person does not follow a balanced diet, they can then suffer from over nutrition or under nutrition.

What are the causes of Kwashiorkor?

A

Low protein diets.

What are some symptoms of Kwashiorkor?

A
  • Swollen stomach and face
  • Swollen liver
  • Sores on the skin
  • Stunted growth and brain development.

What are the causes of Marasmus?

A

A general lack of energy (starvation).

What are some of the symptoms of Marasmus?

A
  • Tight skin
  • Sunken eyes
  • Thin, underdeveloped muscles
  • Constant hunger and fatigue
  • Little to no fat tissue

What is Anorexia Nervosa?

A

It is a psychological condition where the person refuses to eat, which can result in drastic weight loss.

What is Bullimia?

A

Bullimia is a psychological condition where the person overeats regularly, this is then followed by self induced vomiting or an abuse of laxatives to get rid of the food.

What are some consequences for bullimia?

A
  • Tooth decay
  • Dehydration
  • Haemorrhiods
  • Inflamed pancreas
  • Electrolyte (salt) imbalance
  • Tears in the oesophagus

What are the causes of obesity?

A

A diet high in foods and is unbalanced over a long period of time.

What are some symptoms of obesity?

  • Coronary heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Depression
  • Cancer

What are food allergies?

A

They are when the body perceives a food substance as a threat and therefore develops a defence mechanism.
Eg. Antibodies.

What are some symptoms for food allergies?

A
  • Stomach pains
  • Cramps and Nausea
  • Itchy skin
  • Eczema
  • Swelling of the lips, mouth and tongue.

What are some short term effects of alcohol abuse?

A
  • Produces a sense of happiness and well-being.
  • Further consumption:
    • Blurred vision
    • Memory loss
    • Loss of inhibitions
    • Nausea
    • Problems with co-ordination and balance.
