what are cholinesterase inhibitors and what do they do?

A

used to help control the symptoms of dementia

they stop the acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine, this increases the amount of acetylcholine available to bind to receptors, results in better communication b/w neurons

what are some examples of cholinesterase inhibitors? what is the most important thing to tell pts and family who will take this medication?

A

donepezil hydrochloride, rivastigmine and galantamine

-the medication ONLY helps to MANAGE SYMPTOMS, it does not slow down the disease process
