1
Q

What disease does typanosoma cruzi cause?

A

Chagas disease

2
Q

Chagas disease- epidemiology

A

central and south america, zoonosis

3
Q

Chagas disease- pathogenesis

A

blood sucking reduvid bugs –> defecate in wounds –> proliferation in cells –> dispersed around body

4
Q

Chagas disease- affected tissues

A

CNS, GI, and cardiac muscle

5
Q

Chagas disease- Sx

A

asymptomatic initally, chronic tissue destruction and myocarditis

6
Q

Taenia Solium (pork tapeworm)- epidemiology

A

south and central america and asia

7
Q

Taenia Solium- transmission

A

eating uncooked pork/bear which contains larvae

8
Q

Taenia Solium- pathogenesis

A

larvae in GI –> mature into tapework –> eggs hatch in adult GI –> can invade muscle or CNS

9
Q

Taenia Solium- Sx

A

asymptomatic

10
Q

Trichinella spiralis- morphology

A

nematode that can infect any animal and has a life cycle complete in 1 host

11
Q

Trichinella spiralis- transmission

A

infected pig meat

12
Q

Trichinella spiralis- pathogenesis

A

larvae digested out in GI –> adult works in mucosa –> eggs into blood –> larvae penetrate SM and mature

13
Q

Trichinella spiralis- Sx

A

light infections are asymptomatic, inflammatory rxns. Fever, muscle pain weakness and eosinophilia in heavy infections

14
Q

What is an amastigote?

A

A cell that doesnt have visible flagella or cilia

15
Q

What is a trypmastigote?

A

a kinetoplast is near the posterior end of the body and the flagellum lies attacked to the cell body for most of its length

16
Q

What is the trypomastigote life cycle?

A

tiatomine take blood meal –> penetrates varios cells –> multiple by binary fission in tissues –> amastigotes mature into trypomastigotes and then enter blood –> tiatomine –> epimastigotes in midgut –> multiply in midgut –> move to hindgut

17
Q

What are the 2 drugs to treat Chagas?

A

Benznidazole or Nifurtimox

18
Q

What are cysticeri?

A

muscle infection caused by the ingestion of T. solium eggs that hatch and the larve invade muscle and the CNS

19
Q

What diagnostic tool can you use to Dx cysterceri?

A

Cysticeri in muscle eventually calcified and can be seen on radiograph

20
Q

What is the drug of choice for trichinellosis?

A

Albendazole
