Q

What is the acetabular labrum and what does it do?

A

It is a fibrocartilaginous rim attached to the margin of the acetabulum.
It increases articular contact area by 10%, meaning that over 50% of the femur head sits in the acetabulum.

1
Q

Why is the acetabulum weaker at the bottom?

A

Because it is incomplete inferiorly- acetabulum notch

2
Q

What ligament strengthens the inferior portion of the acetabulum?

A

Transverse acetabular ligament

3
Q

Why are ligaments required around the joint?

A

To increase stability and strengthen the joint capsule.

4
Q

What does the ligament of the head of the femur do?

A

Provides a small arterial supply (obturator artery) to the head of the femur.

5
Q

What are the 3 extra capsular ligaments?

A
  • iliofemoral
  • ischiofemoral
  • pubifemoral
6
Q

Which two ligaments are found anteriorly?

A

Iliofemoral and pubifemoral

7
Q

Which ligament is found posteriorly?

A

Ischiofemoral

8
Q

What does the iliofemoral ligament do?

A

Prevents hyper extension of the hip joint

9
Q

What does the pubifemoral ligament do?

A

Prevents excessive abduction and extension

10
Q

What does the ischiofemoral ligament do?

A

Prevents excessive extension of the femur at the hip joint.

11
Q

Which muscles flex the hip? (3)

A

Sartorius, iliopsoas, rectus femoris

12
Q

Which muscles extend the hip? (4)

A

Gluteus maximus, biceps femoris long head, semi membranous, semitendinous

13
Q

Which muscles laterally rotate the hip? (5)

A

Periformis, superior and inferior gemellus, obturator internus, quads

14
Q

Which muscles abduct the hip?(3)

A

Gluteus minimis and medius, tensor fasciae latae

15
Q

Which muscles adduct the hip? (6)

A

Pectineus, gracilis, obturator externus, adductor brevis, longus and Magnus

16
Q

What are the 3 bursae of the hip?

A

Iliopsoas
Trochanteric
Ischiogluteal
