Q

What are the different branches of the Trigeminal nerve?

What number is this?

Where do the sensory branches leave the skull?

Where do the motor fibers leave?

What branches have motor neurons?

A

Trigeminal is CN V

  1. Opthalmic (V1)
  2. Maxillary (V2)
  3. Mandibular (V3)

Opthalmic leaves through - Supraorbital Foramen & Superior Orbital Fissure

Maxillary leaves through - Infraorbital Foramen & Foramen Rotundae

Mandibular leaves through - Mental Foramen & the Foramen Ovale

These are sitting in a first order neuron that is pseudounipolar (Trigeminal Ganglion) (GSA)

There is the Trigeminal Motor Nucleus (SVE) for the Mandibular branch. This nucleus is multipolar and the only branch of the trigeminal nerve that is a motor neuron.

Q

Describe the Facial nerve’s path out of the cranial cavity

What happens to the facial nerve after it leaves the cranial cavity?

A
  • The Facial Motor Nucleus sends out fibers through the internal auditory meatus that split at the Genu.

From the Genu, the motor branch of the facial nerve goes down the Facial canal and out of the Stylomastoid Foramen.

  • Once out of the skull, the facial nerve enters the parietal gland and divides in to 5 branches that supply the muscles of facial expression.

Q

What is the difference between a Nucleus and a Ganglion?

A

A Nucleus is a group of nerve cell bodies located in the CNS. These have nerve fibers that belong to a specific pathway.

A Ganglion is a group of nerve cells outside of the CNS with mutiple tracts?
