Often did many of the same jobs as slaves.
Often worked from dawn until lunchtime.
There was a maximum of 8 working hours a day.

Did many of the same jobs as poor freedmen.
In the country: worked as farm labourers, miners, shepherds.
In the cities: cooks, gardeners, labourers, musicians, secretaries etc.
Slaves were mostly well cared for, as it was senseless for masters to damage what was essentially their property.
