1
Q

Morphology

A

Bony look - ossicles form bony plates over body
Mouth on underside
Spines on arms for movement
Podia stick outside of animal (not in grooves like starF)
Bursal slits are used in respiration
Podia not used in locomotion - instead feeding
-produce mucous on podia to catch prey, or in muddy deposit to pass to mouth
Coelomic canals are restricted

2
Q

Sensory features

A

Photosensitive - can detect changes in light and move away accordingly
Can change colour by chromatophores
Uses temporary brain mechanism - but NS more sophisticated than starfish
-along leg, radial nerves have large ganglia (conc of nervous tissue) giving great control

3
Q

Movement and podia

A

Podia not used in locomotion - instead feeding
-produce mucous on podia to catch prey, or in muddy deposit to pass to mouth
No ampulla present operating the podia (why podia used for feeding)
-restricted due to ossicles and bony plates
Locomotion by thrashing around, use legs to grip substrate to move in a direction
-spines help to grip too
