What are indications for compound opioid use?

A

Mild-to-moderate pain

What is the mechanism of action of compound opioids?

A
  • Paracetamol - weak inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX), which appears to increase the pain threshold.
  • Codeine and dihydrocodeine - metabolised by cytochrome P450 enzymes to morphine and morphine-related metabolites. These metabolites, which are agonists of opioid µ-receptors.
