Low marriage rates

A

Before 1930s - matchmakers arranged marriages
–> guaranteed eldest son a wife

Matchmakers declined in Ireland.

  • -> girls emigrated to Britain
  • -> girls with a secondary education went to Dublin to work as teachers, civil servants, etc.

Women did not like idea of staying on a small, poor rural farm

Bachelor farmers grew in the West
–> reduced when free education came in during 1960s
