A

Thickens cervical mucus (desogestrel inhibits ovulation)

Advantages of the mini pill

A

Can be used in older women, lactating mothers, VTE

Not affected by antibiotics

Action of depo provera injection

A

IM injection every 3 months

Inhibits ovulation & thickens mucus

Advantages of depo provera injection

A

Can be used in breast feeders

Can cause irregular bleeding for first few weeks, usually followed by amenorrhoea

Disadvantages of depo provera injection

A

Progestogenic side effects

Bone density decreases over first 2-3 yrs, then stabilizes. Regained after stopping.

Action of nexplanon implant

Advantages? disadvantages?

A

Lasts 3 years. Prevents ovulation & thickens mucus
No drop in bone density
Progestogenic side effects common, particularly irregular bleeding in first year

Action of mirena coil

A

Replaced every 3-5yrs

Changes to cervical mucus and tubal fluid + prevents endometrial proliferation

Advantages of mirena coil

A

Reduces menstrual loss and pain
Fewer systemic side effects
Rapid return to complete fertility after removal.

Irregular light bleeding can be a problem however

Complications of contraceptive coils

A

Pain/Cervical Shock, Expulsion, Perforation, Menorrhagia/Dysmenorrhoea
Can spread asymptomatic STIs to PID

Cervical/Endometrial cancer 
Vaginal bleeding 
Pelvic infection
breast cancer 
pregnancy
