1
Q

What temperatures do cold receptors work under?

A

5-35˚ C

2
Q

What temperatures do hot receptors work under?

A

30-45˚ C

3
Q

Nociceptors open to what types of stimuli?

A

heat > 45˚ C and capsaicin

4
Q

Sensitization of what type of receptors causes hyperalgesia?

A

nociceptors

5
Q

NSAIDs focus to reduce the release of what type of molecule?

A

prostaglandins

6
Q

What are TRP proteins?

A

non-specific cation channels that open to many different forms of stimuli

7
Q

What is an itch?

A

a perception that isn’t present

8
Q

3 types of pain

A
  1. acute nociceptive
  2. inflammatory
  3. neuropathic
9
Q

Two types of nociceptive pain

A
  • fast, sharp pain

- slow, non-well localized pain (C fibers)

10
Q

Neuropathic pain pathophys

A

complex reorganization of neural pathways, pain even in absence of stimulus

11
Q

Neuropathic pain: CNS or PNS?

A

both CNS and PNS

12
Q

What is the cause of referred pain?

A

breakdown in parallel processing

13
Q

Draw out the gate theory of pain

A

1˚ afferent breaks into two axonal portions:

  • excitatory synapse onto 2˚ afferent
  • inhibitory synapse onto inhibitory gate cell
  • inhibitory gate cell constitutively inhibits 2˚ afferent
  • 1˚ afferent stimulation excites 2˚ afferent and inhibits inhibitory gate cell
  • opiates increase inhibitory gate cell secretions
