1
Q

Spinal Cord

A
  • Functions to coordinate motor information and movement patterns while providing sensory information between the brain and the peripheral nervous system
  • Has the same protective meningeal covering as the brain
2
Q

Cervical, Throacic, and Lumbar Segements

A
  • Inside the vertebral column, extends to approximately L1
3
Q

Connus Medullaris

A
  • Sacral spinal segments
4
Q

Cauda Equina

A
  • Latin “Horses Tail”

- Nerve roots L2-S5 and CO1

5
Q

Grey Matter

A
  • Cell bodies of motor and sensory neurons with synapses
6
Q

3 portions of Grey Matter

A
  1. Upper Portion: Dorsal or posterior horn (sensory)
  2. Lower Portion: Anterior or Ventral horn (motor)
  3. Lateral Portion: T1-L2 levels contain preganglionic sympathetic neurons (produce autonomic involuntary info)
7
Q

White Matter

A
  • Periphery around grey matter
8
Q

2 Tracts of White Matter

A
  1. Ascending Tract: Sensory Fibers

2. Descending Tract: Motor Fiber

9
Q

Tracts

A
  • Communicate to nervous system, can cross from side to side of the body’s innervations. Can cause contralateral injuries
10
Q

Afferent Tracts

A
  • Sensory

- 3 Types

11
Q

3 Afferent Tracts

A
  1. Dorsal/Posterior Columns: Provide proprioception, vibration, two point discrimination and deep touch
  2. Spinal Thalamic Tract; Located anteriolaterally (Pain and Temp)
  3. Dorsal/Ventral Columns: Light touch, pressure and sensation
12
Q

Efferent Tracts

A
  • Motor
  • Skilled movements of the extremities
  • Originate fin the frontal lobe, crosses synapse on the anterior horn cells in the spinal cord.
13
Q

Damage to the corticospinal tract

A
  • Babinski Sign
  • Run blunt object across lateral border of pt’s foot
  • present with great toe is in ext and remaining toes splay out
14
Q

Other Tracts

A
  • Rubraspinal
  • Lateral and Medial Vestibulospinal
  • Tectospinal
  • Medial and Lateral Reticulospinal
15
Q

Rubraspinal

A
  • Innervate UE

- Facilitates flex, inhibits ext and correction of movement errors

16
Q

Lateral and Medial Vestibulospinal

A
  • Postural adjustment “Lateral”

- Muscle Tone Neck and Upper Back “Medial”

17
Q

Tectospinal

A
  • Orientation of head towards sound or movement
18
Q

Medial and Lateral Reticulospinal

A
  • Limb Ext “Med”

- Limb Flex “Lat”
