Q

What is roseola infantum?

A

Affects young children, caused by HHV-6 & HHV-7, abrupt high fever, after fever there is a rashthat starts on neck & trunk but spreads to extremities & face
-Happy looking kid

1
Q

Where does chicken pox hang out?

A

Dorsal Root Ganglion

2
Q

What shouldn’t you give to mono patients?

A

Ampicillin - enlarged spleen

3
Q

Roseola?

A

Young kids, happy, high fever that turns into trunk rash that spreads to extremities

4
Q

Why was smallpox eradicated?

A

Humans are only carriers, doesn’t mutate, aren’t multiple strains

5
Q

What is ECHO virus?

A
  • Fecal shedding
  • Preschool spread
  • Rash on trunk - like flu
  • Fever
6
Q

What is Parvovirus B19?

A
  • Lacy rash, very mild but very contagious
  • Maculopapular rash on red cheeks - “slapped cheeks”
  • Fever, muscle aches
  • Begins on cheeks
7
Q

What is Rubeola?

A

Measles Virus

  • Koplik spots on buccal mucosa that proceed to rash
  • widespread maculopapular
8
Q

What is rubella?

A

German Measles

  • Rash starts on face & spreads to down body
  • Clears over 3 days
  • Forchheimer spots on soft palate
  • Widespread fine rash
9
Q

What is the only Arbovirus?

A

Dengue virus

10
Q

What are symptoms of dengue fever?

A

No rash on soles and palms
-High grade sudden fever, joint pain, sore throat, cough, malaise, vomiting, generalized rash after fever, appears ill & toxic

11
Q

What is the allen test looking for?

A

Blood refill of the hand while compressing the ulnar artery

12
Q

What causes the power stroke?

A

Release of phosphate from the ATP on the myosin head

13
Q

Why would you want to prolong ACh release?

A

Myasthenia Gravis

14
Q

Myasthenia Gravis

A

Creates antibodies against ACh receptors

15
Q

What does tetrodotoxin do?

A

Blocks VG Na+ channels

16
Q

When it’s hot, what does the post-synaptic neuron release on the AV shunt?

A

Ach to muscarinic receptors that causes vasodilation

17
Q

When it is cold, post-synaptic neurons release?

A

NE that binds to alpha and beta receptors and causes vasoconstriction

18
Q

What does Furosimide (Lasix) do?

A

Blocks NKCC channels in eccrine & apocrine glands

19
Q

What innervates the teres minor?

A

The lower subscapular nerve

20
Q

What causes Lambert-Eaton syndrome?

A

It’s caused by autoantibodies against Calcium channels in motor neurons resulting in inability to release ACh

21
Q

What happens in myasthenia gravis?

A

Autoantibodies are generated against nicotinic receptors in skeletal muscle

22
Q

What causes malignant hyperthermia?

A

It’s caused by a mutation of the ryanodine receptor allowing excessive release of calcium, usually triggered by anesthetics [Ca2+ induced Ca2+ release channels]

23
Q

What mutation results in Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy?

A

A mutation in dystrophin, a skeletal muscle support protein.

24
Q

Where is tetrodotoxin from and what is its abbreviation?

A

Pufferfish, other seafood, TTX

25
Q

What usually causes malignant hypothermia?

A

Anesthetics

26
Q

What innervates the triceps brachii?

A

Radial nerve (sometimes the long head is innervated by the axillary nerve!)

27
Q

What does Lambert-Eaton Syndrome cause?

A

Muscle Weakness, its autoimmune
