Tests of Difference Flashcards

1
Q

Describe t tests

A
  • Widely used within psych
  • Tests the difference between 2 mean scores; the larger the difference, the more likely to be significant
  • 2 types = related t test and independent t test

Q

T test and SPSS:

  • Levene’s test
  • T
  • Df
  • Sig
A
  • Levene’s test = shows whether there are equal variances in the data set; not significant the read top line, if significant read bottom line
  • T = t value; the larger the number, the more significant
  • Df = degree of freedom
  • Sig = significance level; less than 0.05 = significant

Q

Describe effect sizes

A
  • Looks at overlap between 2 distributions (less overlap = stronger effect)
  • Use cohen’s d to work out effect size
    1. Find the mean and the SD; add together and divide by2
    2. Take mean from group 1 and 2 (ignore minus sign)
    3. Divide answer in step 2 by answer of step 1
