1
Q

Mainland-island metapopulation structure

A

A single habitat patch (the mainland) is the dominant source of individuals emigrating to other habitat patches (island) within a metapopulation network

2
Q

Metapopulation

A

A population broken into sets of subpopulations held together by dispersal or movements of individuals among them

3
Q

Rescue effect

A

An increase in population and a decrease in the risk of extinction brought about by an increase of immigration into a population

4
Q

Sink habitat

A

A habitat area that receives immigrants from a source habitat, but in which the subpopulation would continually decrease in size because of mortality and poor reproductive success without continual immigration from excess individuals in a source habitat.

5
Q

Sink populations

A

Local population that cannot maintain a positive growth rate; its persistence is dependent on immigration

6
Q

Source populations

A

Local population that is capable of maintaining a positive growth rate and functions as a source of emigration to other local populations within the metapoppulation
