1
Q

What is the philturm?

A

Median groove on the external surface of upper lip

2
Q

What is the frenulum?

A

Fold attached to deep surface of upper lip and gum

3
Q

What innervates the muscles of facial expression?

A

Facial nerve (CNVII)

4
Q

How does the buccinator aid mastication?

A

By pressing cheeks and lips against the teeth to avoid food accumulating in vestibule of mouth

5
Q

Name the main muscles of facial expression

A

Obicularis oris, obicularis oculi, buccinator, frontalis, occipitalis

6
Q

What is the blood supply to the face?

A
Forehead and anterior scalp= opthalmic artery
Superficial temporal, posterior auricular and Occipital= lateral and posterior scalp
Facial artery (wiggly one)
7
Q

What forms the extenal jugular vein?

A

Retromandibular vein+ superficial vein from behind ear

8
Q

Describe the facial vein

A

Formed at medial angle of eye, runs down behind artery. Below mandible its joined branch of retromandibular vein and joins internal jugular vein

9
Q

Where is the parotid gland found?

A

Between the mastoid process and the mandible

10
Q

Why does swelling of the parotid gland cause severe pain?

A

Stretches the fascial capsule

11
Q

What is the supply of the parotid gland?

A

Parasympathetic supply travels with glossopharyngleal nerve, synapses in otic ganglion, postsynaptic fibres travel with auriculotemporal nerve (V3) to parotid gland
Sympathetics come from external carotid plexus

12
Q

What passes through the parotid gland?

A

Branches of the facial nerve, retromandibular vein, terminal branches of external carotid artery

13
Q

Which areas of the face aren’t supplied by the trigeminal nerve?

A

Area over mandible and parotid gland= cervical plexus

14
Q

Which division of the trigeminal nerve is wholly sensory?

A

Maxillary division (V2)

15
Q

What does the maxillary nerve supply?

A

Dura mater (meningeal branch)
Skin over the maxillae, upper teeth, roof of mouth, soft palate, nasal cavity and part of auditory tube
Infraorbital nerve emerges on face

16
Q

Where does the facial nerve arise and what happens to it?

A

Arises at the cerebellopontine angle and passes into internal acoustic meatus travelling in the facial canal. Parasym fibres come off and supply pterygopalatine ganglion. Sensory leaves as chorda tympani and also conveys parasym to submandibular ganglion.
Motor root gives branch to stapedius before exiting skull via stylomastoid foramen, supplying post belly of digastric and stylohyoid then entering parotid gland.
Splits into 5 motor branches.

17
Q

What are the 5 terminal motor branches of the facial nerve?

A
Temporal
Zygomatic
Buccal
Mandibular
Cervical
18
Q

What muscles are supplied by the facial nerve apart from muscles of facial expression?

A

Stapedius
Posterior belly of digastric
Stylohyoid

19
Q

Mumps can cause problems with the facial nerve- how?

A

Inflamed parotid gland presses on terminal motor branches of facial nerve
Only motor problems to facial expression muscles
