1
Q

What is a stimulus?

A

A change in your environment to which you may need to react

2
Q

What is a receptor?

A

Groups of cells which are sensitive to a stimulus

3
Q

What are the sense organs?

A
Eyes
Ears
Nose
Tongue
Skin
4
Q

What receptor does the eye hold?

A

Light receptors - sensitive to light

5
Q

What receptor does the ear hold?

A

Sensitive to sound and balance

6
Q

What receptor does the nose hold?

A

Smell receptors- sensitive to chemical stimuli

7
Q

What receptors does the tongue hold

A

Taste receptors

8
Q

What receptor does the skin hold?

A

Sensitive to touch, pressure, pain and temperature change

9
Q

What is the central nervous system?

A

Consists of the brain and the spinal chord and is where all the information from sense organs are sent and where reflexes and actions are coordinated

10
Q

What are neurones?

A

Nerve cells that transmit information as electrical impulses Quickly to and from the nervous system

11
Q

What does the nervous system do with the information?

A

Sends it to the effectors (muscles and glands) which then respond

12
Q

What is a synapse?

A

The connection between two neurones
The nerve signal is transferred between chemicals which diffuse across the gap
Chemicals set off new electrical signals in to next neurone

13
Q

What are reflexes?

A

Automatic responses to certain stimuli which can reduce your chance of being injured

14
Q

What is a reflex arc?

A

The passage of information in a reflex (from receptor to effector)

15
Q

What is the sensory neurone?

A

The nerve cell that carries signals as electrical impulses to the nervous system

16
Q

What is the relay neurone?

A

The nerve that carries signals from sensory neurones to motor neurones

17
Q

What is the motor neurone?

A

The nerve that carries signals from the relay neurone to the effector

18
Q

Describe a reflex arc?

A
  1. Bee stings you
  2. Pain receptor is stimulated
  3. impulses travel along the sensory neurone
  4. Impulses are passed along a relay neurone via a synapse
  5. Impulses travel along the motor neurone via a synapse
  6. When impulses reach effector (Muscle) it contracts
