Tear of muscle or tendon

2
Q

What is a sprain?

A

Tear of ligament

3
Q

What is a closed fracture?

A

Broken bone where skin is intact

4
Q

What is an open fracture?

A

Broken bone where skin is violated and bone is exposed to outside environment

5
Q

What is reduction?

A

Refers to the act of lining bone fragmenets back into their normal anatomic location

6
Q

What is fixation?

A

Refers to a method used to hold a bone in place (casts, plates, screws, rods, etc)

7
Q

What is ORIF?

A

Open reduction internal fixation –> making an incision and using hardware to fix a fracture

8
Q

What is treatment for an open fracture?

A
  • an “emergency” because bone is exposed
  • high infection risk
  • Irrigation, debridement, fixation
9
Q

What is compartment syndrome?

A

Increased pressures in an anatomic compartment that can lead to muscle necrosis, limb ischemia, and bad outcomes

10
Q

What is the treatment for compartment syndrome?

A

Must release pressure via surgical fasciotomy

11
Q

What is a pathologic fracture?

A

A fracture through abnormal bone (ex. metastatic bone disease)

12
Q

What are the most common causes of metastatic bone disease?

A

Breast, kidney, prostate, thyroid, lung carcinoma

13
Q

What is the most common location for metastatic disease of the bone?

A

Spine
