What are the primary lymphoid organs?
Bone marrow and thymus.
What are the secondary lymphoid tissues?
spleen, tonsils (waldeyers ring), lymph nodes, Peyers patches (in the gut), GALT, MALT, BALT (gut/mucosa/bronchiolar associated lymphoid tissue).
What is lymph? What colour is it?
Fluid lost from the capillary bed- clear normally.
What is the name for lymph with a milky white colour from the intestines?
Chyle.
Why is lymph important?
Removes damaged cells and pathogens.
Where are your lumbar trunks?
What do they drain?
They run either side of the abdominal aorta.
They drain the abdominal cavity.
What is the at the top/joining of the lumbar trunks?
Cysterna chyli.
What does the cysterna chyli drain?
The intestines.
Above the cysterna chyli where does the lymph go?
the thoracic duct. Runs on the surface of the abdominal aorta.
Where does the right lymphatic duct drain too?
It drains at the angle between the right jugular vein and the right subclavian vein.
Which areas of the body drains to the right lymphatic duct?
The right upper limb, 75% of the breast lymphatics via axillary nodes, right side of the thorax, upper right side of the abdominal wall, right side of head and neck.
Where does the left lymphatic duct drain to?
Junction of the left subclavian and left jugular veins.
Which areas of the body drain to the left lymphatic duct?
left side of the head and neck, left side of the thorax, left upper limb, left side of the abdomen, the right side of the abdomen, both sides of the pelvis and both lower limbs.
