Q

What causes gluteal gait or lurch?

A

Paralysis of G. Maximus due to damage/lesion to the inferior gluteal nerve (L5-S2)
-Limited hip extension on affected side during mid-stance, compensated for by hyperextention of the trunk

1
Q

What is the function of the gluteus maximus?

A
  • Extends the leg at the knee joint

- Forcefully extends and laterally rotates thigh at hip joint

2
Q

Where do you want to give gluteal injections?

A

Superolateral quadrant, near summit of iliac crest

3
Q

What is Iliotibial band syndrome?

A

It’s caused by running/exercising - long distance runners

  • Result of irritation of the distal portion of the iliotibial tendon as it rubs against the lateral femoral condyle - inflammation and irritation of the iliotibial band
  • Hurts in lateral knee and lower thigh
  • Treatment: rest and reduce inflammation
4
Q

What does the tensor fasciae latae muscle do?

A

It flexes the thigh and stabilizes the knee in extension

5
Q

What are the funtions of G. medius and G. minimus?

A

Hip abduction

Medial rotation

6
Q

What is Trendelenburg’s sign or gluteus medius limp and what causes it?

A

It is where when the foot is raised on the normal side, the pelvis falls on that side - supporting mech. fails and pelvis sinks when an attempt is made to stand on affected limb

It’s caused by damage to the superior gluteal nerve and paralysis of the gluteus medius and minimus

7
Q

What is the function of the piriformis muscle?

A

Lateral rotator!

8
Q

What can a posterior dislocation of the hip joint cause?

A

Injury to the sciatic nerve

9
Q

What is a charley horse?

A

Contusion and tearing of muscle fibers enough to result in a thigh hematoma (collection of blood), pain, stiffness

10
Q

What causes hamstring injuries?

A

Common in adults that run and kick hard (sports) - attachment to ischial tuberosity may tear (avulse)
