What is an Embedded System?
An embedded system is a specialized computer system to control machinery, equipment or a plant that has both software and hardware components
What are the characteristics of an embedded system?
a. An embedded system is designed to do a specific task
b. Software for embedded systems are stored in ROM or flash memory (for faster loading)
c. Knowledge about the behaviour at design time can be used to minimize resouces and to maximize robustness
d. Provide Low power consumption in many situations

What is a standalone embedded system?
a. It works by itself
b. It takes the input either in digital or analog format, processes , calculates and converts the data and gives the resulting data through the connected device.
c. examples are mp3 players, digital cameras. microwave overns and temperature measurement systems.
What is a real time embedded system?
a. A system which gives a required output in a particular time.
b. Follow time deadlines for the completion of a task.
c. Classified into soft and hard real time systems
what is a network embedded system?
a. related to a network to access the resources
b. connected network can be LAN, WAN or the internet
what is a mobile embedded system?
a. used in portable embedded devices like cell phones, mobiles, digital cameras, mp3 players and personal
digital assistants . The basic limitation of these devices is the other resources and limitation of memory.
what are Small Scale Embedded Systems?
These types of embedded systems are designed with a single 8 or 16-
bit microcontroller, that may even be activated by a battery. These
systems are simple in application needs where the performance
requirements are not time critical, e.g., an electronic toy
what are Medium Scale Embedded Systems?
These types of embedded systems design with a single or 16 or 32 bit
microcontroller, RISCs or DSPs.
what are Large Scale (Sophisticated) Embedded Systems?
These types of embedded systems involve highly complex
hardware and firmware such as in mission/safety critical
applications.
