Hematology Flashcards
The hemogram can be broken down into what four groups?
erythrogram
leukogram
thrombogram
plasma
To create the hemogram, what tests are run?
Cell count
Measurement of red blood cell and platelet indices
Blood smear examination
Assessment of the plasma appearance and total solids
Measurement of cell counts calls into the consideration of what cell types?
RBCs (RBC mass, Hgb concentration), reticulocytes, WBCs, platelets
Measurement of the RBC indices calls into consideration what?
MCV (mean corpuscular volume), mean corpuscular concentration, mean hemoglobin concentration, RBC distribution width
What is MCV
Mean corpuscular volume - the average RBC size
What is MCH?
Mean corpuscular hemoglobin - a measure of the average hemoglobin content in and individual RBC
What is RDW
RBC distribution width - a measure of the variation in RBC volume
What parameters are measured when assessing platelets?
MPV (mean platelet volume), MPC (mean platelet component), PDW (platelet distribution width)
What is the MPV
Mean platelet volume - the average platelet size
What is the MPC?
Mean platelet component - measure of the internal complexity of the platelet
What is the PDW?
Platelet distribution width - a measure of the variation in platelet volume
What does the buffy coat contain
WBC and platelets
The hemoglobin concentration is estimated to be what?
1/3 of the hematocrit
