Features of a Domus
> Atrium surrounded by rooms. > Small garden at the back. > Made of limestone, tufa and brick > Interior plastered and frescoed. > Exterior whitewashed > Windows slits on the outside and widened on the inside. > Toilets and kitchen placed together to share water supply. > Little Furniture. > No interior doors.
Features of a Villa
> Owned by wealthy landowners. > Very grand by the 3rd century. > Frescoes, Mosaics and statues. > Villa Rusticana- used for making wine, cultivating animals and grain. > Villa Urbana- lavish area where rich tenants lived. > Surrounded by gardens and fields. > Had their own baths. > Made of flint, mortar, chalk and timber.
Features of an Insula
> Some were large and luxurious, some small and squalid. > Could have any number of rooms. > Only 4-5 storeys high due to building restrictions. > Residents ate their meals at Thermopoliums, it was too unsafe to cook in the flats. > Top floors were very unsafe and cramped, but lower floors were more luxurious. > Wood burning braziers were used for heat, but they were a fire risk.
