Comes from the performer themselves. Can be instantaneous.

They are easier to self asses.

Will not know about the skill so will rely on extrinsic feedback for improvement.

Comes from outside sources, usually a coach. Can be positive or negative.

Happens within the time of the performance. Beneficial as it can be acted on immediately.

It is given at the end of the performance. It’s more reflective. Given from a holistic coach (ie as a whole game).

When the coach is in contact with the learner as they perform the skill.

When something is used to help with an athletes performance.

Individual learners style; learners ability; skills being taught; the facilities available.

Q

What is the advantage of using the following guidance’s:

Visual
Verbal
Mechanical/manual

What are the disadvantages of using the following guidance’s:

Visual
Verbal
Mechanical/manual

A

Visual guidance means that the learner knows what the skill they have to perform and what it looks like.

In verbal, the coach can explain in further detail or emphasise specific points about a skill

In manual and mechanic, the coach can help performer execute skill safely and successfully and feel how the movement should be done.

If visual is in form of video, learners won’t be able to ask questions to clarify.

It can be difficult for beginners to understand especially if it is a difficult or complicate skill.

This isn’t possible for all sports.
