What is Portuguese?

Portuguese is a Western Romance language and whilst the native language in Portugal -- like English and England -- it’s the speakers living globally that also makes Portuguese a major language.

Portuguese is also the official language of Brazil (making up over 200 million speakers), Mozambique, Cape Verde, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe. It can be found in areas far and wide due to its spread during Colonial times also being found in areas of India, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Caribbean.

With around 280 million speakers, Portuguese is the sixth major language spoken globally and speakers make up approximately 3% of the world’s population. Spoken on five continents, it’s also the second fastest growing of European languages after English.

Portuguese majors may consider a number of career paths after graduation including Court Interpreter, Foreign Exchange Trader, UNESCO official, Translator/Interpreter, Foreign Service Officer, Importer/Exporter, and many more.
