About Molecular Biology on Brainscape

What is Molecular Biology?

The branch of biology which studies biology at a molecular level is molecular biology. Closely linked to biochemistry and genetics, molecular biology attempts to understand the interactions of systems within a cell, protein synthesis, as well as the interactions between RNA and DNA.

Sounds pretty complex? Molecular biology may not be your thing, but you’ll still have to study it to become a nurse, physical therapist, vet, nurse practitioner, or family physician.

However, if molecular biology is your thing, you’ll know it’s awesome. Molecular biologists are at the forefront of pioneering research. Techniques developed by molecular biologists have made it possible for parents to be warned of passing on inherited diseases to their children, to identify criminals and produce life-saving vaccines. Molecular biologists are busy working on solutions to the world’s looming energy crisis and a cure for cancer.

Careers in Molecular Biology

If you want to pursue careers related to biochemistry and molecular biology, then the best way is to earn a four-year bachelor’s degree in chemistry or biology with coursework in mathematics, biochemistry, and physics. You can then either take a two-year master of science (M.S.) degree or a preferred four-year doctorate (Ph.D.) degree. Usually, Ph.D. students have their tuition fees paid for and receive a stipend for living expenses--but they might have to help out with a little tutoring work!

Molecular biologists generally work in education, government, and biotechnology companies. They work on projects such as drug therapies, new research, and agricultural biotechnology.

If you are interested in pursuing a career in molecular biology, then you’ll find lots of helpful information at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. You could check out another great video from the Crash course team’s excellent biology course.

Learning Molecular Biology

Getting to grips with molecular biology is tough going! It requires students to memorize a large volume of information covering both advanced chemistry and biology. This complex subject coincides and merges with a number of biological disciplines; Therefore, you may find other pages in Brainscape helpful such as cellular biology, molecular genetics,  biochemistry, bioinformatics, and epigenetics.

Brainscape is the perfect study aid to help you tackle the foundational concepts and remember the vast amounts of complex terminology and information involved in molecular biology.

Molecular Biology in Brainscape

The Brainscape system allows learners to learn for free and keep on learning for free, forever! You only ever pay if you want to access premium content. There are thousands of molecular biology flashcards prepared by top academic experts as well as like-minded students to choose from, all to use for free.

At Brainscape, we get that learning is individual, and that's why you can also use the Brainscape software to create your own flashcards. We’d love you to contribute to our continually evolving learning library. But if you want to keep your flashcards private, that’s fine too.

If you’re learning molecular biology in high school, or looking to enroll in med school and you need to brush up--then check out the best AP Biology and MCAT study guides available on the market.

Learn faster with Brainscape

Learning molecular biology is exceptionally challenging so use the most powerful learning engine on the planet to lighten the load!

Brainscape’s remarkable learning system is transforming the way people learn. Studying with Brainscape means you’ll actually learn twice as fast and remember longer. Use the extra time to increase the amount you study or take a well-deserved break.

The Brainscape system is called Confidence-Based Repetition (or CBR) and comprises three scientifically proven learning methods: active recall, spaced repetition, and metacognition. This combination makes CBR the most powerful education tool available today.

The first learning method used in the CBR system is active recall. In Brainscape learners have to recall answers and thus they strengthen the neurons and memory trace as they do so. As a result, the next time you try to recall the same piece of information, the strong neural pathways allow for easier retrieval.

Next in the CBR system is spaced repetition: a system proven by thousands of academic studies dating back to the 1930’s.

What makes Brainscape different is the third learning method of metacognition that fuels the algorithm. Succeeding each answer being revealed in Brainscape, learners spend a moment to consider their understanding and knowledge of the answer and leave a record on the scale from 1-5.

This information allows the algorithm to perfectly place each card according to the rating. Low rating card will be shown more frequently and high rating cards less frequently. With all the cards placed optimally for learning, you never waste a second going over content you already know and build up your weaker areas.

The Brainscape system is favored by top academics and doctors, so get started today!
