• A highly controlled experiment in an artificial environment. The team can completely manipulate the IV, they also have full control to exclude any extraneous variables
• e.g. smoke filled room experiment

• The experimenter has some control. The study takes place in a natural/real life environment
• e.g. members of the public following instruction given by the same man wearing uniform and not wearing uniform

Natural experiments

• No IV control, it cannot be manipulated by the experiment. The IV occurs naturally and the experimenters take advantage of that
• e.g. studying the effects of a tsunami

Quasi experiments

• experimenters have some control as they can set up an experiment that they are interested in, but they cannot allocate conditions as they already exist
• e.g which gender is stronger ?
