Q

Explain ionic bonding

A

Ionic bonds are formed when electrons are transferred between atoms
It then turns into an ion
An atoms becomes positively charged when I looses an electron and becomes negatively chatted when it gains an electron
Metals tend to loose electrons and non metals usually want to gain electrons

Q

What a re the properties of ionic bonding

A

High melting and boiling points
Do not conduct electricity when solid
When dissolved in water or melted they conduct electricity
A lot of energy is needed to break these bonds

Q

What a re the properties of covalent bonding

A

Low melting and boiling points
Do not conduct electricity
Are usually gases or liquids at room temperature
Bonds with covalent molecules are very strong
