Emission Spectroscopy
Can identify elements present in a sample but does not measure how much is there
Atomic absorption spectra
A technique used to identify the presence and concentration of substances
What is AAS mainly used for
detecting the concentration of metal ions in solutions
Step 1 of AAS
A hollow cathode lamp of the metal being analysed is used
Step 2 AAS
sample is vapourised which turns the substance into atoms Light passes through and element will absorb specific wavelenghts of light
Step 3 AAS
Particular wavelength is chosen by the monochromater and the intensity of measured by the detector as concentration of element is increased there will be less light
